Abstract

Eight cell types were evident in the pituitary of Gudusia chapra. The pituitary is divisible into rostral pars distalis (RPD), proximal pars distalis (PPD) and pars intermedia (PI). The RPD contains predominant type-1 (prolactin) cells and bordering the orohypophysial cavity the type-2 (corticotroph) cells are present. The PPD is composed of type-3 (thyrotroph), type-4 (somatotroph) and type-5 (gonadotroph) and the PI contains two cell types: type-6 and type-7 cells which are stainable with PbH and PAS respectively. The 8th cell type are the typical chromophobes which do not accept any stain and are found in all the component parts of the pituitary.
