Abstract

Pregnancy is a state characterized by many physiological hematological changes, which may appear to be pathological in the non-pregnant state. Variation in some haematological indices during pregnancy was investigated. 110 samples were collected from 80 pregnant women who presented themselves for antenatal care in ABUTH Kaduna and 30 non-pregnant apparently healthy women. The mean haemoglobin concentration of the control subject was 13.2g/dl and pcv 0.39l/l, MCHC 33.8g/dl, WBC 6.4x109/l and platelets 214.2x109/l. while in primigravidae, the mean Hb was 13.03g/dl, pcv 0.381l/l, MCHC 34g/dl, WBC 7.5X109/L, platelets 215.4X109/l. The overall mean Hb in multigravidae was 12.1g/dl ,pcv 0.34l/l, MCHC 35.7g/dl, WBC 6.5x109/l and platelets 22ox109/l. There was no significant difference in the overall mean of primigravidae as showed above when compared to non-pregnant women and which is in contrast to the multigravidae. There was no significant variation in red cell morphology in primigravidae when compared to control subject, while in multigravidae a moderate degree of anisocytosis was observed with a slight predominance of microcytes.
